Mold RemediationAttic Mold Removal Cost Calculator
Attic mold usually shows up on the roof sheathing from poor ventilation or a roof leak. Enter the affected area and the attic remediation rate to see a realistic cost range.
Attic mold removal typically costs $1,500–$4,000 for an average attic, or roughly $12–$20 per square foot of affected sheathing. Cramped, low-clearance attics and full roof-deck coverage push toward the top of the range.
How this calculator works
Attic jobs are priced on the roof-deck area showing mold. We multiply that by the attic rate (which runs a little higher than finished rooms because of the cramped, hot working conditions) and add a flat amount for fixing ventilation and post-job testing — because attic mold is almost always a ventilation problem.
What changes the number
- Poor attic ventilation or a missing vapor barrier is the usual root cause — fixing it is part of a lasting repair.
- Encapsulation (sealing the cleaned sheathing) is common in attics and adds to the rate.
- A roof leak adds roofing repair on top of the remediation.
- Low clearance and blown-in insulation that must be removed and replaced raise the price.
Frequently asked questions
Why does attic mold keep coming back?
Almost always because the moisture source — poor ventilation, a roof leak, or missing bathroom-fan ducting — wasn’t fixed. Remediation without solving airflow is temporary.
Can I remove attic mold myself?
Small surface patches under about 10 sq ft can sometimes be DIY’d with proper protection, but widespread roof-deck mold needs containment and proper disposal — and you still have to fix the ventilation.
