Guide · 1 min readDoes homeowners insurance cover water damage?
Sudden and accidental from inside? Usually yes. Gradual leak or outside flooding? Usually no. The full rundown.
Whether your homeowners policy pays for water damage comes down to one question: what caused it? Insurers cover sudden, accidental events — not slow problems you were expected to catch, and not water that came from outside the house.
Usually covered
Damage that is sudden and accidental and originates inside the home: a burst pipe, a failed water heater, an overflowing washing machine, or rain that gets in after a storm suddenly damages your roof. Check your own situation in seconds with our coverage checker.
Usually NOT covered
- Gradual leaks. A slow drip under a sink for months reads as deferred maintenance — excluded.
- Outside flooding. Rain, rivers, storm surge, or groundwater entering the home needs separate flood insurance (NFIP or private). A standard policy never covers it.
- Sewer or drain backup. Excluded unless you bought a specific water-backup endorsement.
Should you even file?
Covered doesn’t always mean worth claiming — a water claim can raise your premium for years. Once you know the repair cost, run the water damage insurance claim calculator to see whether filing actually beats paying out of pocket.
