How to file a water damage insurance claim

Document, mitigate, file fast — the steps that protect your claim, plus how to decide if it’s worth filing.

A water damage claim goes smoothest when you move fast and document everything. Here’s the order of operations.

1. Stop the damage and document it

Stop the water source and photograph and video everything before you clean up — wide shots and close-ups of every affected item. Insurers expect you to mitigate; they can deny damage that got worse because you didn’t.

2. Check whether it’s covered

Sudden and accidental from inside is usually covered; gradual leaks and outside flooding usually aren’t. Confirm with the coverage checker before you call.

3. Decide if it’s worth filing

A claim can raise your premium for years. Weigh it with the water damage insurance claim calculator — for repairs near your deductible, paying out of pocket often wins.

4. File and keep records

Call your insurer, get a claim number, keep receipts for emergency mitigation, and don’t throw out damaged items until the adjuster has seen them.

Mitigate, don’t over-repair
Do enough to stop further damage (extract water, dry the area). Hold off on permanent rebuilds until the adjuster signs off.
