How to get rid of mold (and when to call a pro)

Under ~10 sq ft and on a hard surface? You can likely handle it. Bigger or black? Call a pro — here’s why.

Whether you can tackle mold yourself comes down to size, surface, and type. Get those wrong and scrubbing just spreads spores into the air and the wall cavity.

When DIY is fine

A contained patch under about 10 square feet on a hard, non-porous surface (tile, glass, sealed wood) is usually safe to clean yourself. Wear gloves and an N95, ventilate the room, and use detergent and water — the EPA notes bleach isn’t required for routine cleanup.

When to call a pro

  • The area is larger than ~10 sq ft, or spans multiple spots.
  • It’s on or behind porous materials like drywall, insulation, or carpet — these usually get removed, not cleaned.
  • It’s in the HVAC system, or you suspect black mold.
  • Anyone in the home has breathing issues or a weakened immune system.
First, confirm it’s mold

Don’t skip the cause

Mold always comes back if the moisture stays. Fix the leak or humidity, then clean. For pro jobs, ballpark it first with the mold removal cost calculator.
