How to prevent mold in your home

Mold can’t grow without moisture. Control humidity and airflow and you starve it — here’s how.

Every mold problem traces back to one thing: moisture. Control that and you prevent almost all of it — far cheaper than removal.

Keep humidity under 50%

Mold thrives above about 60% relative humidity. A hygrometer (cheap) plus a dehumidifier in damp areas keeps you in the safe zone. Basements and crawl spaces are the usual offenders.

Ventilate the wet rooms

Run bathroom and kitchen exhaust fans during and after use, and make sure they vent outside, not into the attic — venting into the attic is a leading cause of attic mold.

Fix leaks fast

Mold can start within 24–48 hours of water exposure. Repair drips, roof leaks, and seepage quickly, and dry anything that gets wet within two days.

Trouble spots to watch
Under sinks, behind the washer, around windows, the basement perimeter, and the attic roof deck. A quick monthly look catches problems while they’re cheap.
