Does homeowners insurance cover basement water damage?
It depends entirely on where the water came from. A burst pipe or failed water heater is covered. Groundwater seepage and outside flooding are not — those need a flood policy. A sewer backup needs its own endorsement. A sump pump failure is usually excluded unless you carry a specific sump-pump or water-backup rider.
How long can water sit in a basement before mold grows?
Mold can start in 24 to 48 hours in the right conditions, which is why extraction and drying are urgent even when the damage looks cosmetic. After about 48 hours you should assume you are dealing with a mold job as well as a water job, and price accordingly.
Do I need to remove basement drywall after a flood?
Usually the bottom portion, yes. The standard approach is a flood cut — removing drywall to 12 to 24 inches above the waterline — because the paper facing wicks water well above the visible line and insulation behind it stays wet. Solid masonry walls can often just be dried and cleaned.
