Frequently asked questions
Why is basement mold so common?
Basements are below grade, cooler, and poorly ventilated, so humidity condenses and feeds mold. Any foundation seepage or plumbing leak accelerates it.
Will a dehumidifier alone fix basement mold?
It helps prevent new growth by keeping humidity under ~50%, but it won’t remove existing mold — that still needs cleaning or removal of affected materials.
How much does basement mold remediation cost?

Is basement mold remediation worth it if the basement keeps getting wet?
Remediation alone is not, no — mold will be back within a year if the water is. Sequence it the other way round: fix the seepage (grading, downspouts, a sump pump, or interior drainage) first, then remediate, then run a dehumidifier to hold humidity under 50%. Paying for remediation before the water is solved is buying the same job twice.
Can I remediate basement mold myself?
The EPA’s rule of thumb is that under about 10 square feet is reasonable to handle yourself with proper protection and ventilation. Beyond that you need containment and negative air pressure to avoid spreading spores through the rest of the house, which is most of what you are paying a contractor for.
Does a dehumidifier stop basement mold?
It prevents new growth by holding humidity below roughly 50%, but it does nothing to existing mold — that still has to be cleaned off or cut out. Think of the dehumidifier as the thing that keeps the remediation from having to happen again, not as the remediation.
